IMPOUND VEHICLE

Impounded Vehicle Release Requirements

Impounded Vehicle Release Requirements

Tow Truck

If your vehicle has been impounded by a law enforcement agency:

You must establish ID and ownership. IF YOU DO NOT, HAVE NOT, OR CANNOT PROVE OWNERSHIP WITH A CURRENT PHOTO ID, CURRENT REGISTRATION, OR A CLEAN TITLE, NO LAW ENFORCEMENT AGENCIES WILL ALLOW US TO LET ANYONE REMOVE ITEMS FROM A VEHICLE. THESE ARE LAW ENFORCEMENT IMPOUNDS, AND THEY HAVE THEIR OWN RESTRICTIONS.

Definitions

Current Registration

Registration for the impounded vehicle is a card that shows the VIN# for the vehicle, the registered owner name, and the effective dates (start and expiration) for the registration. It shows you have paid your taxes, and can be used (if valid) to show ownership. Some registrations (Maine for example) will also establish proof of insurance. Some states (Texas and Massachusetts for example) require a sticker on your windscreen. The paper that sticker was attached to is your registration. This establishes OWNERSHIP.

Current Government Photo ID

This is the physical (not a picture, not a copy) form of government ID that has your picture on it. The physical id is needed in case law enforcement or the State have revoked or suspended your identification. IDs can be a passport, State ID card, Driver license, etc. Yes, a Buff One card is a legal government photo ID. Your Costco card, your Facebook profile, voided or expired IDs, pictures of your driver’s license do not count. If the ID has expired, it is not valid. You will need to get a new one. IF YOU WISH TO DRIVE OFF OUR LOT, you will need a current DL, or a friend with one, and they can drive the vehicle from our lot. If you do not have a CURRENT DL, or a friend with one, we can tow your vehicle anywhere you like for an additional fee. This establishes WHO YOU ARE.

Current Insurance

This is the insurance identification card that your insurance company gives to you so that you may prove minimum liability coverage in case you are in an accident, or have been pulled over by law enforcement. This card must be current if you wish to operate your vehicle on our property. If you do not have CURRENT insurance coverage, we can tow your vehicle anywhere you like for an additional fee. This card must have the correct VIN# and list the effective dates of coverage. If it is expired, it is not valid. INSURANCE, current or otherwise, DOES NOT ESTABLISH OWNERSHIP. This establishes LIABILITY FOR YOUR ACTIONS ON OUR PROPERTY, should you damage our property, or the property of another while on our premises.

Clear Title

This is the legal document that establishes ownership of the vehicle. It will have the registered owner’s name typed on the front (Colorado). There will be no marks or signatures on the back of the title. If the title has been signed over, it is now a GREY TITLE, and IS NOT VALID FOR OWNERSHIP. Take it to your county clerk’s office and have the vehicle legally put in your name. They will then issue a CLEAR TITLE in your name. This establishes OWNERSHIP.

All Hold Vehicles

(BPD, BCSO, CSP, UCPD, or any other police agency)

Any vehicle that has been placed on a hold by a police agency may not be accessed, entered, touched in any way shape or form by employees of Marv’s Quality Towing, the registered owner, or any family members. The vehicle may not be released until the holding agency informs us that the hold has been lifted. Absolutely no items may be removed from the vehicle until the holding agency informs us that the hold has been lifted.

Once the hold has been released, the vehicle may be released in the proper manner according to the established procedures. Any other inquiries regarding the hold need to be directed to the holding agency.

BPD SCOFFLAW VEHICLES:

Any vehicle that has been impounded by BPD for scofflaw (unpaid parking tickets) will require a release from the municipal courts in addition to the normal release procedure. This release form simply states the tickets have been paid, and proof of ownership still needs to be established. There are different stamps on the impound form for the municipal court and the standard police release.

Release of Property from an Impounded Vehicle

If your vehicle is a guest here at our lot due to an accident or similar circumstance, please understand that if we ask you to prove who you are and that you own the vehicle, we are simply trying to ensure we are releasing your property to its rightful owner, and not just anyone who lays claim to your items. We are a business, and if the car is here, there is a bill against it. We will need payment agreed upon before most items can be removed. Sometimes this is as simple as releasing the vehicle to your insurance company, if they are covering the towing and storage.
